Softball Queensland Under 16 & 18 State Team Head Coaches Announced

Softball Queensland is pleased to advise of the appointment of the under 16 and 18 state team head coaches. Congratulations to Chris Edards (16 Boys), Dion Johannessen (16 Girls), Matt Chapman (18 Boys) and Andrea House (18 Girls) on their appointments for 2019/20. 

Softball Queensland is thrilled to announce the signing of Chris Edards as the Head Coach of the U16 Boys Qld Team. Chris has coached the U23 Mens team for 3 years, leading them to 3 National Titles. Chris coached the U15 Qld Team in Canberra this year and went on to winning the Title.Chris went to NZ in April with the Aussie Diamonds Boys U14 Development Team and also came away with a title over there. Chris has been playing Softball for 42 years and still plays representative softball at state titles. Started playing in Maryborough and now in Toowoomba. Softball QLD CEO Ross Symonds ‘Chris has had a very successful year in the Head Coach role both at State and National level which was added to again recently, winning the U23 Men’s National Championships at Redlands in July. Chris has found a way through his coaching techniques to get the best out of his players and teams be that through a long extended preparation period or on short notice as was the case at the U15 Regional Championships in Canberra back in January. SQI is excited about the depth of talent coming out of the U15 boys program and are confident we have the right coach in Chris to provide the direction, accountability and structure for .’

Under 16 Girls Coach – Dion Johannessen

Softball Queensland is thrilled to announce the signing of Dion T. Johannessen as the Head Coach of the Queensland Under 16 Women Team to compete at the 2020 National Championship, in Victoria, competing for the Esther Deason Shield.The Queensland Under 16 Women team has competed for the Esther Deason Shield since 1970. Queensland last won this tournament in 2013 and finished in fifth place in the 2019 tournament. Dion T. Johannessen has previously been involved in the Queensland Heat and QAS program. Dion has also coached Queensland at the Junior Level and actively coaches at the district association level – Brisbane Softball Association. Dion also coaches at club level, currently coaching the Panthers Softball Club under 18 women’s team. Dion is a current level , 4 Nationally Accredited Coach. Softball Queensland CEO Ross Symonds “Dion brings a wealth of experience to the U16 Girls Head Coach role at a Club, DA and State level which will provide a solid foundation for his players and assistant coaches to work off as they prepare and compete at the National Championships in January.  Dion is very committed to the development of the athlete as a whole and not just their on diamond skillsets and will ensure this approach is taken during the teams preparation phase. Dion sees the big picture for his young developing players and his previous elite level coaching experience with the HEAT program allows him to understand what mental and physical challenges lie ahead for his young athletes as they travel through the pathway.”.

Softball Queensland is thrilled to announce the signing of Matt Chapman as the Head Coach of the Under 18 Men’s Team. The QLD U18s Men (formally the QLD U19s Men) have won 7 Nox Bailey Shields at the National Championships in previous years. Matt has coached in the Queensland Jr Mens Programs for the last 8 year and been part of 3 National Championship winning sides. Over the last 8 years, Matt has been a part of multiple teams at all levels of the Jr Development Pathway from U15s Regional Academy – U19 Mens at the National Level and our U19 Development Teams at the International Friendship Series.
Matt has been working with this age group at a National Level for the last 3 years at the International Friendship Series and was a member of the coaching staff for the 2019 U18 Jr Steelers Squad this year at the U23 National Championships, assisting in player preparation for selection for the 2020 U18 WBSC Mens Jr Worlds. Softball QLD Elite Athlete Program Coach Fabian Barlow “Matt has worked his way through the SQI Coaching Pathway for several years which has led to his appointment as Head Coach of the U18 Boys State Team. Throughout Matt’s time in the pathway he has continually looked to develop his overall coaching skills as well as provide a positive but accountable environment for the athletes to develop their skills. Although it is the Junior Boys World Championship selection year for this playing group Matt will ensure his young men are fully focused on each other and the goals they need to meet as a Qld team throughout their campaign before players worry about individual goals.”.

Softball Queensland is thrilled to announce the signing of Andrea House as the Head coach of the U18 Women’s Team . Andrea was the Assistant coach for the U19 Women’s Team last year, finishing 2nd at the National Championships. This is Andrea’s first Head Coach appointment for QLD. SQ Elite Athlete Program Coach Fabian Barlow “Andrea will provide strong leadership as the Head Coach of our U18 Girls State Team. As an Assistant Coach for the Under 19 Girls teams who made the Grand Final in January and throughout the interview process for this appointment Andrea has been very clear and consistent in the expectations she has for the playing group around accountability, work ethic and integrity. Andrea will ensure our U18 Girls State Team are well prepared both physically and mentally and provide the ultimate opportunity to present the best of themselves at the National Championships.” Quote from Andrea House ” Everyone wants to win, whether it’s in life or softball.
