27th February 2018

Softball in the Mackay Region continues to go from strength to strength with the announcement from Mackay Regional Council and Softball Queensland that the 2018 Under 17 Boys’ State Championship will be held in Mackay this year.

The event will bring over 400 participants and supporters from softball associations throughout Queensland to Mackay where the teams will challenge for the 2018 Under 17 Boys’ State Champions title.

Mayor Greg Williamson said council was pleased to support the championships through its successful Invest Mackay Events Attraction initiative.

“State Championships like these are a perfect fit for our Invest Mackay funding support,’’ Cr Williamson said.

“They attract competitors, officials and supporters to Mackay, allowing us to showcase our region,’’ he said.

The State Championships will be hosted by Mackay Softball Association at Theo Hansen Park in Beaconsfield from 22 to 24 September 2018.

Softball Queensland General Manager, Sue Nisbet, said the Mackay Region offered high quality softball facilities, had a strong local softball association and supportive local Council, which were deciding factors in bringing the event to the city.

“It is great to be able to bring the Under 17 Boys’ State Championship to Mackay and for the local community to support our district teams and benefit from this event,” Ms Nisbet said.

“The championship will see young male athletes of 14, to 16 years of age representing their local associations. Most participants will be vying for selection in the 2019 Queensland Under 17 Boys team which will be announced at the closing ceremony of the championship. The players selected in the Queensland Under 17 Boys team will compete for the Arthur Allsopp Shield in the 2019 Australian Under 17 Boys Championship.

“Softball Queensland sincerely thanks the Mackay Regional Council for their support of this event and softball in general in the region,” she said.
